the surf blog
As previously mentioned, I am now a teacher in the art of surfing as well as various other things. One of the challenges issued to me by my former teacher, who is now my colleague, was to make a blog for the surf class. I did so quite early, but I haven't been shouting too much about it due to its lack of content - until now, that is! Unfortunately, for all those who don't understand Norwegian, the blog contains only posts in our native language. But fear not. For there are a lot of interesting photos (look for the word "bilder") and videos for you too look at, to catch something of a glimpse of what exactly it is we do here.

esben now teaching full-time
Esben started working full-time today, for the first time in his life. We drove him out to Klepp Folkehøgskule as we did a year ago; not as a student this time but as a member of staff.
He will be working with the surf class (obviously), assisting Jan Bjarte. His official title was going to be "assistant teacher" but Jan Bjarte felt that this sounded too passive. They ended up agreeing on the new title of "veileder" which translates to "supervisor" in English. I don't think "supervisor" really captures the feel of "veileder" so I prefer to translate it to "guide".
This year will be a challenge for Esben but I know he will do a good job and learn a lot along the way. The best of luck Esben!
t-t-t-t-twenty
Esben seems pleased with his new shortboard that we gave him for his twentieth birthday. He is hoping to be able to try it out for the first time on Friday if the forecast is to be trusted.

Well it was pants on Friday so we just had a good look at some of the local spots. Saw a total of three surfers in the water and none of them seemed to be having any fun. But I got a text message from Esben today (Monday) saying:
Just been to Bore (beach). Nice, surfable waves. Board works beautifully! No probs catching and standing up on waves on it.
surf camp in the algarve
As Elisabeth wakes up to her first day in Barcelona, Esben is waking up to his last day in Portugal. He has been on a surf camp in the Algarve (Carrapateira) for a week now with his class, enjoying better waves, less wind and warmer temperatures than we have had back home.
He sent me a text last Sunday:
just got back from the beach, surf owns! Shorter boards, a lot more manouverable
He sent me another text a day later which made me giggle. It was the classic "having fun, send more money". Hope to hear more reports from him after his return to Jæren (via Oslo) tomorrow.
haircut of the century?
** STOP PRESS ** As I write this, Esben is finally getting his hair cut, for the first time in 381 days! This is what he looks like right now.
the missing link
The missing link being Esben, has moved away from home. He hasn't moved far but the house feels empty without him (slamming doors and coming home late...:O) )
It's been a week now and we gather he's having a fantastic time since we haven't heard from him.
Esben has moved to Klepp (a village just 15min away from Sandnes) and is attending Jæren folkehøgskole. His main "subject" this year is surfing.
Both Tim and I are jealous: imagine a year of fun-fun-fun, making new friends and no homework!
